Research Studies

A main objective of this project is to train 12–13 researchers from Central America in both natural and social sciences.

It is good, but not necessary for a candidate to have an MSc/MA degree. A good candidate with BSc/BA degree will be offered a 1-year Swedish Master's education before being admitted to research studies. Such an education may also be needed for candidates with a master degree that is not fully appropriate for the intended PhD studies.

The successful candidate will come to Sweden on a "sandwich" basis, and will on average spend about half of the total time in Sweden and about half in Central America. All field work and data collection will be carried out in Central America. All research students must be employed and salaried by their home university and will receive a scholarship from ISP when in Sweden.

All hub universities must confirm their intention to offer a university affiliation for each selected candidate no later than 31 March 2010. The hub coordinator must clarify and confirm that the candidate will be established on the payroll of the university before the candidate can be admitted to research studies. Since each hub university can have candidates in more than one research area, i.e., in more than one faculty or department, this confirmation must be signed by the vice chancellor/rector of the university.

Swedish University Degrees

Higher education in Sweden went through a radical reform on 1 July 2007. All students who, after that date, start their education towards a certain degree belong to the degree ordinance of 2007:

First Level

There are two degrees on first level.

  1. University diploma: 120 HE (higher education) credits (two years of full-time studies), including a major subject of 60 HE credits minimum of with 7.5 HE credits constitute an individually performed project work.
  2. Degree of Bachelor: 180 HE credits (three years of full-time studies), including a major subject of 90 HE credits minimum of with 15 HE credits constitute an individually performed project work. At Uppsala University a bachelor’s degree in addition to these general conditions also requires at least one minor subject of studies of at least 30 HE credits.

Second Level

In the Swedish system there are two levels of Master degrees.
  1. Degree of Master (one year): 60 HE credits (one year of full-time studies), including a major subject of studies of 30 HE credits minimum at the second level and a dissertation of 15 HE credits minimum.
  2. Degree of Master (two years): 120 HE credits (two year of full-time studies), including a major subject of studies of 60 HE credits minimum at the second level and a dissertation of 30 HE credits minimum.

Third Level

Education at the third level is considered as "research studies". There are two degrees.

  1. Degree of Licentiate: 120 HE credits (two years of full-time studies), including a dissertation.
  2. Degree of Doctor (PhD) 240 HE credits (four years of full-time studies), including a dissertation.

Research studies often involve both degrees at the third level: first a degree of licentiate (two years) and then a degree of doctor (another two years).
